Turns out it was not binutils being buggy, but my build environment
having failed to migrate from libsframe2 to libsframe3.
Apparently noone tried to reproduce my build problem. For future sake,
those of you offering to help maintain asterisk, please consider how
you might be helpful. I don't mean to imply that you were expected to
solve this, just saying that one possible action of trying to build
head of git in the past weeks would have revealed that the issue I
experienced were local to my system (build would still fail, but due
to another minor packaging issue that I now corrected).
