📌 The Big Story
Trump Said He’d Choose Iran’s Next Leader. Iran Chose Anyway.
Here’s what happened this weekend in one sequence: Trump told ABC News that Iran’s next supreme leader would need his approval. ‘If he doesn’t get approval from us, he’s not going to last long,’ he said. Iran then chose Mojtaba Khamenei — the son of the man the US and Israel assassinated on Day 1 — specifically because the US said he was unacceptable. An Assembly member publicly stated the candidate was picked because he should ‘be hated by the enemy.’ Iran’s parliament speaker mocked Trump on X, saying Iran’s future ‘will be determined solely by the proud Iranian nation, not by Epstein’s gang.’
The new Supreme Leader: 56 years old. Hardline cleric. Deep IRGC ties. Not publicly heard from since the war started. Currently reported to be injured and in hiding. Already has a target on his back — Israel declared any Khamenei successor a military target before he was even named. Lindsey Graham said on X it’s ‘just a matter of time’ before he ‘meets the same fate as his father.’ The US sanctioned him in 2019 for advancing his father’s ‘destabilizing agenda.’
What’s not being asked: Trump said the war ends with Iran’s ‘unconditional surrender.’ He also said he’d choose Iran’s new leader. Iran just chose a harder-line leader than before, explicitly to defy him. The IRGC immediately launched new missiles after the appointment. Israel says it needs three more weeks. The math does not add up. What does ‘unconditional surrender’ look like when the new Supreme Leader was selected as an act of defiance, is in hiding, and has the IRGC pledging blood allegiance to him?
📡 Under the Radar
Three Stories Being Buried Right Now
1. A US Commander Reportedly Told Troops That Trump Was ‘Anointed by Jesus’ to Wage This War
Multiple US military commanders are being accused of framing the Iran war in explicitly religious terms to troops on the ground. One commander reportedly told soldiers that Trump had been ‘anointed by Jesus’ to wage this war. This is not a fringe story — Democracy Now is reporting it and it draws on multiple sourced accounts. The US military has strict rules about commanders imposing religious framing on official military operations. Nobody in mainstream coverage is asking what the Inspector General is doing about this, or whether it affected how orders were carried out.
2. The Girls’ School Strike: 168 Dead, Trump Blamed Iran, Pentagon Is Still ‘Investigating’
A US missile struck an elementary school in Minab, Iran, killing at least 168 young girls. The New York Times, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International have all indicated preliminary findings point to US responsibility. Trump told reporters he believed Iran did it. Pete Hegseth said the US is ‘still investigating.’ The investigation has been ongoing since the strike. No timeline for conclusions. No independent access granted to the site. Meanwhile, the number in mainstream US headlines keeps quietly changing — from 100+ to 168 to 175 depending on the outlet. Why is there no single confirmed figure ten days in?
3. Toxic Black Rain Is Falling on Tehran
Israeli strikes on oil depots caused fires that burned for hours, spawning a thick cloud of toxic smoke over a city of 10 million people. Black raindrops containing toxic hydrocarbon compounds, sulfur, and nitrogen oxides fell across Tehran. Residents reported difficulty breathing. Iranian Red Crescent reports 10,000 civilian structures damaged, including nearly three dozen medical facilities. This is a public health catastrophe on top of a war — and it is receiving a fraction of the coverage that the leadership succession story is getting.
🔍 Who Benefits?
The ‘Holy War’ Framing Goes Uninvestigated
If a US military commander told troops that a sitting president was divinely anointed to wage a specific war, that is a violation of the constitutional separation of church and state, Department of Defense directives on religious expression, and basic chain-of-command neutrality. It would normally trigger an immediate IG inquiry and congressional oversight hearings.
Instead, it’s a single-day story in left-leaning outlets. No Republican senator has been asked about it on camera. No Pentagon spokesperson has been asked directly whether commanders used religious justifications in their orders.
Verdict: NARRATIVE MANAGEMENT — the story exists, the sourcing is credible, and the institutional silence around it is doing significant work for people who don’t want ‘was this a holy war?’ to become the frame.
📺 The Noise
What’s Loud vs. What Matters
LIKELY DISTRACTION | Trump vs. The New Supreme Leader on Social Media
Trump threatening Mojtaba Khamenei on Truth Social will be wall-to-wall cable today. It’s real news — a US president threatening to kill a foreign head of state in a public post — but the coverage will be about tone and drama, not the legal and diplomatic implications of a president publicly declaring a sitting foreign leader a military target before any formal engagement has occurred.
WATCH ANYWAY | G7 Emergency Oil Meeting — Today
G7 finance ministers are meeting today to discuss a joint release of emergency oil reserves. French President Macron floated the idea over the weekend. Oil hit $119 a barrel this morning before retreating to $105. If the G7 releases reserves and it doesn’t move the price meaningfully, that’s the signal that markets believe this disruption is structural, not temporary. Watch the price reaction after any announcement — that tells you more than the announcement itself.
📚 Your Homework
Find Department of Defense Directive 1300.17, which governs religious liberty in the military. Read the section on commanders specifically. Then ask: if a commander told troops that the Commander-in-Chief was ‘anointed by Jesus’ to wage a specific war — does that constitute imposing religious belief in an official military context? Who has standing to file a complaint? Has anyone?
Bonus: find the IRGC statement pledging allegiance to Mojtaba Khamenei issued within hours of his appointment. Compare its language to the statement from Iran’s president. One reads like defiance. The other reads like a man who knows he’s being outflanked by his own military. Those are two different governments.
⚖️ The Verdict
Trump said he would choose Iran’s next leader.
Iran chose a harder-line successor specifically because the US said he was unacceptable. The IRGC — the military force actually running Iran’s war effort — immediately fired missiles to announce themselves. A US commander reportedly told troops this war has divine backing. 168 girls are dead in a school strike that has not been officially attributed ten days later. Oil hit $119 this morning.
The original stated goal was preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. That was last June. The new stated goal is unconditional surrender. The person who is supposed to surrender is injured, in hiding, just named supreme leader as an act of defiance, and has a military pledging to fight to the last drop of blood.
If the goal keeps changing, and the new goal is increasingly impossible to define — at what point is the war no longer about the goal?
