There are also other issues.

is rather annoying for networks with several access points.

Due to the various wicd issues, I've switched to nmcli, e.g.

  nmcli device wifi rescan
  nmcli device wifi list
  nmcli device wifi connect ...
  nmcli device disconnect ...

There are completions for bash and zsh.
