Thanks for your report!

For some reason, the original patch from the mailing list you linked to 
was never applied upstream, but I actually sent the same patch a couple 
months later [1], and it has been applied in upstream's "next" branch [2].

However, it won't appear until the next Window Maker upstream release. 
Since this makes the wmmenugen utility unusable, it's probably worth 
backporting the patch for now in Debian.  I'll upload a new version shortly.
