Well, we've concluded that soname should be bumped once when a
particular unstable branch forks off from stable, and again when that
unstable branch congeals into a release candidate for the next stable.
The result ought to be compatibility within each stable series and at
least a warning if you try to mix that with an unstable version
although there won't be explicit ABI tracking within the unstable
branch.

I trust that would be sufficient ?  Mixing and matching toolstacks and
hypervisor versions is somewhat limited in any case although within a
particular stable series it is supposed to work.

It's obvious that this hasn't been done properly so far (current
xen-unstable is as you say still calling itself 3.0) but I will try to
make sure that the 3.2 RCs, and the 3.2 release, have 3.2 in the
sonames.
