I've noticed that the xen clocksource at least appears to confuse the
kernel quite a bit. At least when running Debian kernels on Citrix
XenServer you need to change the clocksource of your domUs might freeze.

I'm not sure if this is directly related or not. In any case I've
resorted to using jiffies as clocksource on all domU hosts and my
problems have vanished.
