Thanks for your feedback. For this sort of issue it would be more useful
to raise on xen-devel. As you observe others are having similar problems
with X so adding your experiences to that thread on xen-devel would be
useful.

I've seen something similar and have a suspicion this might be related
to the e820 map -- I think RAM which coincides with reserved regions in
your e820 is currently handed back to the hypervisor. Again this would
be worth raising on xen-devel. I vaguely recall a patch recently to
reclaim this RAM somehow.

I was planning to experiment with dom0_mem=<X>G on the hypervisor
command line plus mem=<X+1>G on the kernel command line and see if I
could balloon dom0 backup to get the full <X>G I asked for.
