How have you determined that the guest is an HVM domain?

Note that the presence of a qemu process does not necessarily correspond
to HVM, since qemu can also under some circumstances be used to provide
a PV disk backend.

And just to clarify: Neither your dom0 not your domU are BSD? Both are
Debian Linux?
