Package: lists.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

Dear list maintainers,

I'd like to request a mailing list for the Debian Xen team, so we can
migrate from alioth-lists life support.

Name:
-----
debian-xen

Rationale:
----------
The Xen Hypervisor related packages in Debian are maintained by multiple
people as a team.

The Xen virtualization software is quite a broad product. It supports
different cpu architectures, different virtualization methods, even
booting virtual machines in different ways and many use cases from small
single server deployment to large clusters using live migration, etc...

Users choose their own hardware, their own small or large set of
features that they use. The small team maintaining the packages is very
much helped by feedback and help from the users of the packages to get a
better test coverage and gather feedback.

Examples of usage for the mailing list:
* Used as maintainer address for the packages, (e.g. for bug reports).
* Team members report to the list with progress updates about work that
is planned or done and coordinate uploads.
* Be an easy accessible place that any Xen user in Debian can use as
starting point to ask any related question, even when unsure about
things or if a bug should be opened, etc. Or, of course asking what they
can do to help.
* Bug squash or related meetings can be announced.
* Users can be asked to help testing package updates (for stable updates
or for new big changes).

The archive functionality is important, since it might provide context
about why things were done in the past. Here's for example what happened
in the last few days:

https://alioth-lists.debian.net/pipermail/pkg-xen-devel/2018-October/thread.html

The list has lived on the alioth mailing list service since 2006, and is
currently at:

https://alioth-lists.debian.net/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pkg-xen-devel

Note: I'm in the team, but don't have official DM or DD status (yet?).
In Cc is Ian Jackson, DD from the team. I'm available to help in
whatever way I can to get things moved, but probably Ian also has to
push some buttons somewhere.
