I can reproduce something similar in my desktop environment¹ by pressing
[esc]+[any arrow] (``^[OD`` gets entered on the command line) followed
by enter to send it

¹ fluxbox + urxvt + ssh + screen, which is probably why some keypresses
result in “odd” characters.
