ZoL in Debian is only a matter of time. Now, suppose ZoL gets accepted.
What's next step? If it is about getting it working in d-i (and relying
solely on the source form), then I believe a discussion with d-i folks
may help to find a solution.

It's been four years in the blur with no real serious legal advice on 
the
matter. Now, we have that and I believe FTP-masters will be able to 
review
the package soon. I can understand your frustration, but you should keep
calm. In any case, we have never been so close to reach an end on this
matter. :-)
