I think it might be better to wait for the grub issue to be resolved, though:
  at that point, users would get a normally-functionning Debian system,
  whereas currently, the post-inst scripts for kernel packages fail
  (due to grub-probe failing).

Not sure.

Some additional searching revealed that this should be implemented upstream:

However, I was unable to get it to work yet:
