Much appreciated, Craig!  

I started using zfs a year ago and was naively thinking that the Debian 
package system somehow "handled" things.  I see that is not the case.  What 
can be done better?

I agree.  After reading up more on this (thanks to pointers in the upstream 
bug), I learned about the "META" file from zfs that notes the maximum kernel 
version and have since backed off to 6.10.

I sent a note directly to the pkg-zfsonlinux-devel mailing list suggesting 
that it would be helpful to indeed emphasize this more to users of Debian zfs 
packages.

It seems my email got lost, so I'll just re-ask the question here: could the 
maximum linux version be better conveyed to package users?  For example could 
there be a package conflict added to prevent me from upgrading the kernel?
