No idea what upstreams position is, but the upstream issues seem to be

2024-06-23 with no response so far.
If switching to gawk is not an option, I noticed

propose to implement sorting as a function in mawk.
An alternative might be to replace the END block with a pipe to sort and
cut outside the awk call.
