Thanks for the summary (and your questions).

I'll continue to maintian/upload the debian plone (and related)
packages, unless another Debian developer would prefer to adopt them;
I've encouraged Christian (and others) to send me their prospective
.debs or patches for testing and eventual upload.

Have you looked into the other Debian packages that depend on
zope-cmf*?  Last time we checked (a few months ago), there were
interface incompatibilities between CMF1.3 and CMF1.4 that would break
some of the CMF-using packages.  I have no idea whether that's still
true, but we'll need to resolve those problems if they still exist.

I'm still very interested in plone, but I have very little time to
work on these problems and packages for now.  I will do my best to try
to facilitate progress.

I've added CC's to some other people who've recently expressed
interest in helping get plone2 into Debian.
