I am sorry that I was so silly and didn't look at the error msg with any
care -- out of disk space indeed could trigger a thought about
permissions... I copied offscreen.py into /tmp and symlinked data and
everything worked fine... so sorry once again for the noise (although
indeed vtk could be more to the point in their error messages)
