[Python-apps-team] Bug#513993: wicd: doesn't handle hidden essids correctly

Package: wicd
Version: 1.5.8-1
Severity: normal
I have an AP with a hidden essid. I can connect to it with 'iwconfig eth0
essid hidden_essid'. Wicd doesn't work initially, however, hanging on
'Obtaining IP address'. 'iwconfig eth0' at this point shows 'Essid: <hidden>'.
Entering 'hidden_essid' into the 'Network' pulldown causes it to connect. The
AP is then shown twice in the Wicd window; this is obviously because it now
also appears twice in the output of 'iwlist eth0 scan'. In both places there
are now two entries with the same bssid, one with no essid ("" in the iwlist
output, and "<hidden>" in Wicd) and once with the correct essid.
Wicd doesn't save the essid; upon restart, or even suspend / resume, it must be
reentered.
The wireless interface on the client machine is a Broadcom 4318, driven by the
in kernel b43 driver. No encryption is in use on the network.
This problem, or similar ones, have been discussed in various places:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/wicd/+bug/250198
http://wicd.net/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=274
http://wicd.sourceforge.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=408
Many of the comments seem to imply that it is related to wpa_supplicant, but as
I have stated, I'm seeing the bug on an unprotected network.
