Side note: that page is not part of the documentation distributed with
git and is IMHO misleading.  The directory holding your work is called
the work tree or working tree.

Of course that is a small detail.  The only reason I mentioned it in
connection with that manpage is to indicate

 - this is jargon-heavy
 - it is bewildering to a new reader

Don't we want mercurial to be usable by people who have never used a
version control system before?  That's why I wrote my actual
impressions --- it's not like I'm making this up...
