[Python-apps-team] Bug#886035: cherrytree: Don't depend on python-appindicator

Package: cherrytree
Version: 0.37.6-1
Severity: serious
User: pkg-gnome-maintainers at lists.alioth.debian.org
Usertags: oldlibs

As part of a large ongoing effort to reduce the number of packages
depending on deprecated and unmaintained GNOME2 era stuff, I'd like to
remove the python-appindicator binary package.

cherrytree is the only package in Debian depending on
python-appindicator. Therefore, I'm filing this bug as serious. (One
python-appindicator reverse-depends and one reverse-recommends is
proposed for removal from Debian. The other reverse-recommends,
gpodder, will be fixed when the next version of gpodder is packaged in
Debian since gpodder has switched to gtk3).

cherrytree runs fine without python-appindicator. If it were
installed, it allows the app to be minimized to the appindicator area
instead of quit when the app is closed. (That option can be enabled in
Edit > Preferences > Miscellaneous > Enable System Tray Docking and >
Use Appindicator for Docking.)

cherrytree will eventually be ported to gtk3 and will then be able to
use the gtk3 appindicator support. See the upstream bug attached to
https://bugs.debian.org/822586 .

I am uploading a NMU to fix this issue to DELAYED/10. Please let me
know if I should upload sooner or slower than that. I will attach the
minimal debdiff in my follow-up email.

Thanks,
Jeremy Bicha
