    Backport properties to Cython 0.23 syntax

    The syntax to define properties in Cython has changed from
    version 0.23 to 0.24. Upstream uses the newer syntax, but Cython
    0.24 is not available in Debian yet. Thus, we backport to the
    older syntax.
