well, that's a question going a bit OT from matplotlib :)

that's weird, by default (I think during lenny release cycle) apt
install recommends, and you can disable it in apt-get with:

       --no-install-recommends
           Do not consider recommended packages as a dependency for
           installing. Configuration Item: APT::Install-Recommends.

if you --reinstall mpl what does it happen?

you can also try to investigate it with a user-support forum, like
debian-users ml or so.

it shouldn't at least from the top of my head: python-tk is available
both for 2.5 and 2.6, and so mpl.
