Dear Maintainer,

starting ipython notebook --pylab failes with

> [IPKernelApp] GUI event loop or pylab initialization failed

in the console when first using matplotlib tools when python-matplotlib
is not installed while the web interface only gives

> NameError: name 'plot' is not defined
