are you  still able to replicate this problem with an up-to-date
matplotlib? For example: 1.2.0 just landed in experimental, it would
be nice if you can try with that version.

If you still can replicate, can you please provide the source code
(along with all the necessary files) that generates it, so I can debug
it further?
