It seems, for whatever reason, that there's a problem on :
$ env/bin/python /usr/bin/easy_install /usr/share/python-virtualenv/pip-1.1.debian1.tar.gz
Traceback (most recent call last):

ImportError: No module named _sysconfigdata_nd
Apparently, this can be fixed (depending on the architecture) with something like :
sudo ln -s plat-i386-linux-gnu/_sysconfigdata_nd.py /usr/lib/python2.7/_sysconfigdata_nd.py
Then, starting over works :
olivier at vm1:~/lambdageo$ virtualenv --system-site-packages env
New python executable in env/bin/python
Installing distribute.............................................................................................................................................................................................done.
Installing pip...............done.
olivier at vm1:~/lambdageo$ . env/bin/activate
(env)olivier at vm1:~/lambdageo$
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
