[Python-modules-team] Bug#816595: Patch for this bug

This patch is taken from fixing the same astropy problem. As the author
of pyfits claimed that pyfits-3.4 is more or less a final version of
pyfits, I would not wait until it is fixed upstream. Once the patches
are accepted in astropy, I will however open a similar pull request for
pyfits.
