I don't follow how you reach that conclusion.  My understanding is all
we have concluded is that it is not a bug in glmmTMB.

I've opened an issue with TMB upstream.  "Let's see how deep the
rabbit hole goes." :-)
It's fitting that the quote is from The Matrix (1999).
