You are right, my bad. I *meant* that it should be the same offset as in debian/changelog. But yes, annoyingly it is hard to get date(1) to do that, because of the same reasons I outlined earlier. But debhelper could do it correctly in one place, and then tools could use it.

I guess it's up to me to write a patch for that, and then see if people want it. I suppose we can leave this discussion for now.
