You're right. That was my mistake. I was running out of the git working
directory as
	~/diffoscope/bin/diffoscope --text Firefox.txt Firefox\ 52.0.*.dmg
The error messages stopped appearing after I actually installed the deb:
	debuild -i -uc -us -b
	sudo dpkg -i ../diffoscope_81_all.deb
