Very old. You need to do 'export SANE_SG_BUFFERSIZE=32768' with a kernel that
old.

Can you confirm that sane-find-scanner does _not_ find the scanner ?

AFAIK a kernel panic goes to the console only.

Could you try the other UHCI driver ?
