I think most scanners behave this way. My scanner too - a primax colorado.
I didn't wrote the code but you could have a look at the source:
http://primax.sourceforge.net
The code is not really good for understanding how this is done. Maybe there
are some other drivers with better code.
But if all fails, try it.
