[sane-devel] Failed to open device 'hp:/dev/scanner': Error during device I/O

"Failed to open device 'hp:/dev/scanner': Error during device I/O  "

This message I got using xscanimage (sane-1.04) and Kernel 2.4.0
(shipped with SuSE Linux 7.1).

With kernel 2.2.18 the HP Scanjet IIcx works fine.

I built kernel 2.4.10 and sane-1.05 out of tarball ( to /usr/local ),
but got same error message.

Is this a known issue with 2.4 kernel or is there a workaround ?
