You may have to run /sbin/depmod -a after you modify modules.conf. Which
distribution are you using? If it's SuSE, then there is one more step
required. Please see the instructions at http://www.freecolormanagement.com/sane/suse71.html
- this does also work for SuSE 7.2.

You should either use /dev/usbscanner directly in epson.conf or use
/dev/usb/scanner0 (this is what all newer distributions use by default).
But this still would not work: You have to change the permissions on
the scanner device file to 666, otherwise only "root" can access this
device.
