That, plus the normal SANE doco, got me out of the hole with my HP USB
Scanjet.

I've since upgraded to Debian, but some months ago I was on Mandrake,
and had a bit of a struggle getting the scanner to go.
Seems the key is putting the right stuff into the hp.conf file.

Also, don't forget the usual diagnostic steps:
usbview - this should display your scanner (if it's on USB)
sane-find-scanner - should list your scanner, or some scanner
scanimage -L - should list your scanner when you get hp.conf right
