From the description (scanimage works, graphical frontends don't) I

think it's more a problem of not finding the sane libraries. Maybe
there is an old installation of SANE on the system? If sane-backends
was installed from source, is "/usr/local/lib" in "/etc/ld.so.conf"?

Something like "SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255 xscanimage" and "ldd
/usr/local/bin/xscanimage" should reveil where the frontend looks for
the libraries. The path and name of the frontend must be changed
appropriately for these tests to work.
