Hmm.  I successfully compiled 1.0.7-beta2 on HP-UX 10.20 with both the
HP C compiler and gcc 3.0.1.

The CVS snapshot also _compiles_ with both compilers (since the -ansi
option isn't used for gcc, gcc can be used without having to specify
-D_HPUX_SOURCE, as it was necessary for 1.0.7-beta2); the cc-built
scanimage also works fine, but the gcc-built scanimage doesn't work:

  scanimage: open of device epson:/dev/scanner failed: Invalid argument

So it seems that something was changed between beta2 and your CVS
snapshot which breaks on HP-UX if compiled with gcc...
