This is definitely not related to the scanner - you should get this
message when running any GTK+ or GNOME program.  The problem is that you
have configured a pixmap theme (see ~/.gtkrc), and GTK+ does not look in
/opt/gnome/lib/gtk+/themes/engines for its engines.  You may try to put
the full path into ~/.gtkrc (or the file which is included and which calls
libpixmap.so).  In any case, you can just delete ~/.gtkrc (or rename it
out of the way) - it should affect only the appearance of GTK+ apps, not
their actions.
