That did it. Hopefully it is permanent, that is hope I don't have to do this
everytime I use it.

Sure, because you (as the user) have no access to the scanner. Check
the output of scanimage -L as root, that will give you the device file
you are using (something like /dev/sg0 or so), and then do (as root)
chmod 666 <whichever device file you get from scanimage -L>
to give every user read/write permission to that file.
