I have twain.reg, but it contains keys like
  [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Visioneer\TwainPrefs\ADF]
(the scanner's a memorex)

I don't think it's as simple as that. There is no copyright or licence on
that piece of code, so it cannot (?) be integrated into sane. Those two
backend will live forever as patches, unless Primax clarifies the legal
staus of the viceo sources. I'm not really interrested into enhancing that
backend if it cannot go into sane.
