Absolutely, I would prefer an addition to a readme or so. Maybe we
could issue a warning at the end of the configure run if the platform
is alpha (linux?) and CC is not gcc?

Yes, it's linux, I couldn't test on Tru64 because there is an
installation problem on the machine I have access to and DEC's cc
doesn't like itself.
