Unfortunately, at the time I was having these problems, it wasn't that
easy - some the changes were in the way existing functions were called, 
they order they were called, etc.  

I agree that maintaining a version list like this is not a good idea
for the long term, and I've been planning to back it out once things
have been stable for a while.  I think we've reached that point, so
I'm going to back out the specific version check once the 1.0.9 code
freeze is over.
