I think that the gamma widget still exists.
The deprecated function keep alive in gtk+-2 but
there is no change/improvement for this functions.

It looks a bit strange but it works.
You can compile xsane with gimp support and gtk+-2 while
gimp is compiled with gtk+-1.2
