Well, I haven't repsponded because I did not discover your
suggestions.  After reading your suggestions, find your suggestions
for sane_init() and sane_set_io_mode() very good.  It documents the
current behaviour and make the standard easier to understand. I have
no opinion on the other issues, as I have no experience with these
problems.

I'd suggest you include your changes for those two at least.
