Quite a lot of the USB support isn't that old so a fairly recent
kernel is necessary anyway. E.g. with the kernel scanner module,
2.4.12 or newer is necessary to get support for control messages.
Checking for vendor and product ids works since 2.4.8 if I remember
correctly.

2.2.20 is from 02-Nov-2001, 2.4.2 from 22-Feb-2001, so it's not that
surprising that 2.2.20 has better USB support :-)
