Ooops, I must have missed the original mail.

Henning listed the most likely problem, but it's also possible that
the premissions on the device file (/dev/usb/scanner0) are not set
for read and write access. You can find out if this is the case by
either looking at the output of ls -l /dev/usb/scanner0, or by
trying to run the backend as root user. If this works, then you
have a permissions problem.
