To answer such questions, use the scanner search engine:

Eneter "Hewlett-Packard" and "5400".

You'll see two entries: The first one shows that the 5400 is not
supported in the latest stable release, the second one ,eams that it
is supported in the current development (CVS) version.

So get a CVS snpashot from
http://sane.informatik.uni-freiburg.de/anoncvs/ .
