Hello,

I've just bought an Epson Perfection 1670 scanner (snapscan backend) and
have been testing it lightly. Till now I have tried successfully the
following modes:

- Colour, 1200 dpi
- Colour, 900 dpi
- Colour, 600 dpi
- Colour, 450 dpi
- Colour, 300 dpi
- Colour, 200 dpi
- Colour, 150 dpi
- Colour, 100 dpi
- Colour, 75 dpi
- Colour, 50 dpi

- Grayscale, 600 dpi
- Grayscale, 450 dpi
- Grayscale, 300 dpi
- Grayscale, 200 dpi
- Grayscale, 150 dpi
- Grayscale, 100 dpi
- Grayscale, 75 dpi
- Grayscale, 50 dpi

The 1600 dpi maximum resolution is not available.

The image quality seemed fine to me, but I have no previous experience
with scanners, so I cannot really comment on it. I can tell, however,
that there were no unacceptable flaws.

I used xsane-0.92 and sane-backends-1.0.13 to conduct the tests. Apart
from some problems running xsane as non-root (it segfaults - can't tell
why, xscanimage works ok, so the backend itself must be fine), the whole
process was problem-free.

The only real problem for me was getting the firmware file, since I have
no easy access to a Windows machine... For those interested, I have
uploaded the extracted-after-going-through-hell firmware file here:

(DISCLAIMER: This worked for MY Epson Perfection 1670, on MY system, in MY
universe. I have NOT altered this file in any way, but nevertheless if you
use it you are on your own. If it erases your disk, blows up your scanner,
tells your printer print the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or makes
your mouse steal your girlfriend I've NOTHING to do with this. Some legal
stuff from Epson may also apply, but my guess is that as long as you own
an Epson scanner you already have access to this file if you want to, so
it must be quite safe... I am no lawyer though...)

If I can be of any help, let me know...

Cheers,

Theodoros V. Kalamatianos
