Hello Henning and Gerhard

You both provided some help for my xsane / sane problem.

You suggested I try a more recent SANE backend. I did that, but found that
xsane 0.84 no longer knew where to find SANE. I guess I could have got around
this by finding a source of xsane 0.84 and compiling it. But I couldn't find
it (OK, I probably did not try that hard!) and instead, I tracked down the
source of "quiteinsane" (Henning's suggestion). This seems to work well.

So now I have quiteinsane 0.9 and sane backends 1.0.10 working together OK.

Even the scanner lamp gets switched off when I quit quiteinsane!

My only concern now is that the scanner seems to rattle a bit more than it did
way back (you may remember that I am rebuilding my scanner software because I
"borke" my linux set up). I would not describe it as a "loud noise" but does
sound a bit like the scanner is trying to run too far. This could be my
imagination, but any suggestions would be gratefully received.

In response to some of your points:

- I *think* that kernel 2.4.10 is fine for USB. My keyboard and camera are USB
and work fine.

- I tried to get some debug output, but the command SANE_DEBUG_PLUSTEK=3D20
xsane 2>log.txt did not write anything to log.txt. I presume because I had to
KILL xsane? Anyway, not a problem for me now.

Thanks for your help.

Steve
