I made this change and ran

   $ make modules
   # make modules_install

and rebooted.  Didn't seem to make any difference for my situation.  The
timeout messages still happen -- and about the same rate.

I think I need to isolate the hardware first -- make sure it's not my
scanner that's the real problem.
