your problem "sounds" like a sanei_scsi or kernel problem.

could you run

export SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_SCSI=255
export SANE_DEBUG_HP=255
xsane 2> logfile

(or start any other Sane backend, with stderr redirected to a logfile)

and send me the logfile ?

PS: Which Sane version are you using? "scanimage --version" tells the 
version number.
