xsane can produce JPEG directly. scanimage produces PNM formats (PPM for colour pictures). You can convert PPM to JPEG with - cjpeg (part of the PBMPLUS package) - xv - ImageMagick - ... and of course some picture manipulation programs like the GIMP or Pixel!FX Regards, Ulrich Deiters
